Governor Hogan Announced Today His Commitment to P-TECH Model Schools in Maryland: Corporate community involved, including IBM, Johns Hopkins:
"I thank Governor Hogan for his strong leadership in bringing this innovative transformation of high school to Maryland and high-need districts like Baltimore," said Stanley S. Litow, IBM vice president of Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs and president of the IBM International Foundation. "We devised P-TECH to address the nation’s skills crisis, and to do so for all students, not just those who are most likely to succeed, and it is already fulfilling its promise by increasing college completion rates and seeing its graduates obtain high-wage jobs. We’re committed to helping grow P-TECH, and helping Maryland youth secure a meaningful future. Nothing is more critical to Maryland’s economic success."

America suffers from an over-incarceration problem and it has heavily impacted black men on a whole. Consequently, this has caused havoc on the status of the black family. This is particularly meaningful when one considers that for a long time, black children were reared in two-parent households. One Desoto Times-Tribune article even suggests that blacks were getting married at a slightly higher rate than whites through 1940. The article goes on to say that the issue is illegitimacy and that only blacks can fix this problem of high murders. I slightly disagree. I think the rest of the country has to be a part of the solution. The media, for instance, paints the face of illegal drugs in America as being heavily related to young black men. However, these men generally have no planes or boats or the cash to bankroll the drugs that permeate American streets. That takes Wall Street money, and most sane people know it. Read in Full >>
Frederick Douglass Family and Douglass Ireland Project Board to Join Dedication of Frederick Douglass Square at University of Maryland:
The Frederick Douglass Ireland Project
Founded in 2011 as the Frederick Douglass/Daniel O'Connell Project, the Frederick Douglass Ireland Project highlights the inspirational role that Ireland and the Irish people played in Frederick
Douglass’s life. In 1845, as Ireland was descending into the despair of the great famine, Douglass arrived for a four-month lecture tour of the island. Douglass had escaped slavery in Maryland seven years earlier and had recently published his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself.
He was shocked and appalled by the living conditions of the Irish peasantry and likened them to conditions endured by slaves on American plantations. Douglass was greeted in cities and towns including Dublin, Belfast, and Cork by swells of enthusiastic crowds. Although Douglass continued his speaking tour in Scotland and England, it was his experience in Ireland that he described as “transformative."

Gilmor Homes is also a point of concern – along with the public housing facilities in Westport and McCulloh Homes – for another reason. Residents of Gilmor Homes, for those who missed it, have sparked a federal investigation as there are serious allegations of sexual harassment in this West Baltimore community. This is simply unconscionable, especially given Mayor Rawlings-Blake’s adamant support of Housing Commissioner Paul Graziano. For the record, Sheila Dixon was the first 2016 Baltimore mayoral candidate to call for Graziano’s removal. Further, she praised the whistle-blower (Lucky Crosby) who boldly risked everything to tell the truth. Interestingly, Crosby was immediately fired and then rehired with a gag order. Read in Full >>
