The Glover Report: O'Malley-Rawlings-Blake Team Likely Knew in June that Re-Election Bid Unlikely

(BALTIMORE - September 11, 2015) - The world is seemingly astonished that this morning, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has decided to not seek re-election in the April 26, 2016 primary.

Readers of The Glover Report remember, however, that the mayor’s fundraiser had dropped her. In June, I alluded to the Sun article that noted her fundraiser – the same fundraiser for Martin O’Malley, Brandon Scott, along with Marilyn and Nick Mosby – had dropped Rawlings as a client.

Logic suggests that Rawlings-Blake’s popularity in Baltimore had dwindled so low that the “home team” had chosen months ago to begin to choose a replacement.

Logic also suggests that someone from the O’Malley-Rawlings-Blake machine is preparing to jump in the race.

O’Malley is a master politician, no doubt. However, the Freddie Gray Case has exposed the benign neglect that has occurred in Baltimore since he became mayor in 1999. Communities, like Freddie Gray’s Sandtown, have seen the least resources while other parts of town celebrate the grand opening of waterfront properties.

It will be interesting to see what manufactured candidate will come out of the factory this time. As a political junkie, I say get your popcorn and a tall beverage because with only 7 months left until the election – there’s only a short time for whomever to make a big splash. Fireworks are inevitable!

Otherwise, Baltimore will be returned to a woman who showed-up and showed-out on the Fox 45 panel last evening that discussed the Freddie Gray case. The Fox panel included former Mayor Sheila Dixon, former Governor Bob Ehrlich, state Senator Catherine Pugh, and former FBI agent Dr. Tyrone Powers.

Granted, I’m biased; but from the looks of last night’s 2-hour broadcast, Dixon owned Pugh. You see, some things cannot be manufactured. At some point, it boils down to how well you know and love this city and the people in it. From what I observed, Dixon, born and raised in Baltimore, manhandled Pugh from start to finish. Dixon’s comments seemed so spot-on while Pugh seemed to be lost in a fog trying to pull together a coherent thought. At a couple of points, I really couldn’t tell what she was saying.

Dixon, who has never lost citywide, and Pugh, who has lost citywide twice – once to Dixon for Council President, are the two heavy hitters in this race at present.

So, will someone else get in the race – possibly with the O’Malley-Rawlings-Blake machine? Knowing O’Malley, you can bet all of the tea in China on it.

Until then, the clock is ticking and I’m quite sure today’s announcement has helped the Dixon camp tremendously as it heads into its first major fundraiser on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm at the B&O Railroad Museum.
